Why XTERNA

Most firms hire reactively. The best ones don't.

When a key person leaves, most firms scramble. They post a job, wait, and hope. XTERNA works differently. We give leadership teams a clear picture of the market before they need to move, so that when a role opens, they already know who is out there, what it will take to attract them, and how their firm compares to the competition.

We work with firms that take hiring seriously. Firms that understand that the wrong hire costs more than the right one, and that the best candidates are rarely the ones actively looking.

Intelligence-Led
Built Environment Only

Every week, we speak with engineers, architects, and consultants across the built environment. Not to fill roles, but to understand the market. Who is considering a move. What firms are paying. Where teams are under pressure. Which practices are growing and which are quietly losing people.

That intelligence feeds directly into the work we do for clients. It means that when we bring you a shortlist, it is built on current market knowledge, not a database search.

We work with firms whether they are actively hiring, planning ahead, or simply want to understand how they compare. A search does not need to be live for us to be useful.

Why It Matters

Reactive hiring costs firms more than they think.

Most firms hire when the pain becomes unavoidable. The best ones move before it does. Here's what separates the two approaches.

Reactive Hiring
Roles sit open for months, creating project delays and team burnout
Job boards attract volume, not quality — review cycles consume leadership time
Compensation is guessed, not benchmarked — offers get rejected or overpaid
Competitors are quietly hiring the people you needed six months ago
Hires made under pressure have higher attrition — the cycle repeats
With XTERNA
Average shortlist delivered in 4 days — projects stay on track
Direct engagement with passive professionals who fit your brief exactly
Real-time compensation data from direct market conversations, not surveys
Competitor intelligence built in — you know what you're up against before the offer
96% placement retention — hires made deliberately, not desperately

What We Do

Three ways we work
with your firm.

01
Market Intelligence

Know what is happening in your market before your competitors do. We track hiring movement, compensation shifts, and team-building activity across every sector we cover, using real conversations with practitioners, not aggregated data.

02
Competitor Benchmarking

Understand exactly how your firm compares. Compensation structures, team composition, project exposure, career progression. We give you the information you need to attract and retain the people who matter most to your business.

03
Retained Search

When you are ready to hire, we run a focused, confidential search built around your specific requirements. No volume, no noise. A structured process that delivers a shortlist of the right people, not the most available ones.

Sectors

Built environment,
exclusively.

XTERNA does not work across every sector. We operate within a defined group of technical disciplines connected to building performance, investigation, and restoration. That focus is what makes the intelligence we hold genuinely useful.

Building Diagnostics

Building enclosure consulting, construction defect, roofing, forensic architecture, historic preservation, and BECx. One of our deepest markets.

Hire in this sector
Forensic Engineering

Structural, civil, electrical, mechanical, accident reconstruction, biomechanics, metallurgy and materials, and fire protection.

Hire in this sector
Façade Engineering

Curtain wall consulting, façade systems, design, testing and fabrication. A sector where technical depth and niche experience are non-negotiable.

Hire in this sector
Design and Consulting

Architectural, structural, and MEP consulting practices. Senior technical and leadership roles within specialist design firms.

Hire in this sector
Claims Services

Construction claims, commercial damages, cost overruns, delay and disruption, and litigation support. A specialised discipline requiring rare expertise.

Our Process

Search done properly
takes structure.

Every engagement follows the same rigorous process. It is designed to give you visibility at every stage and deliver a shortlist you can act on, not one you have to filter through.

STEP 01 / 05

Discovery

A detailed briefing with your leadership team. We learn the firm, the team structure, the culture, and exactly what the right candidate looks like — technically and commercially. This is where most search firms shortcut. We don't.

STEP 02 / 05

Market Benchmarking

Before the search begins, we map the competitive landscape. Compensation, team structures, and how your firm sits in the market relative to the firms competing for the same talent. You get a clear picture of what winning looks like before we start.

STEP 03 / 05

Targeted Search

We identify and approach specific professionals with the right background. No job boards. No volume advertising. Direct, confidential engagement with people who match your brief — including those not actively looking.

STEP 04 / 05

Shortlist Delivery

A focused shortlist of qualified candidates, each assessed against your brief. Presented with full context on background, motivation, and fit — so you can make informed decisions quickly, not wade through CVs.

STEP 05 / 05

Offer & Placement

We manage the interview process, gather feedback, and support offer negotiation through to acceptance. Our work does not stop at introduction — we stay involved until the hire is made and settled.

XTERNA Intel

Proprietary Market Intelligence

XTERNA Intel is the intelligence layer that runs beneath every search we conduct. Before a brief is signed, we already hold data on who is moving, what firms are paying, and how your competitors are building their teams. It is what separates a well-placed hunch from a decision grounded in current market reality.

Talent Mapping
We know who the relevant professionals are in your sector before your search begins.
Compensation Benchmarking
Current salary and package data drawn from direct conversations, not industry surveys from six months ago.
Competitor Activity
Visibility into how the firms competing for the same talent are structured, growing, and positioning themselves.

FAQ

Common questions about
working with XTERNA.

Answers to the questions we hear most from firms and candidates across the built environment.

XTERNA is a specialist recruiter focused exclusively on the built environment. We place engineers, architects, and consultants at all levels across building enclosure, facade engineering, forensic engineering, structural restoration, claims services, and data centres across the United States. We also provide market intelligence and competitor benchmarking to help firms understand the hiring landscape before they move.
XTERNA recruits exclusively within the built environment. Our core sectors are building enclosure consulting, facade engineering, forensic engineering, building diagnostics, curtain wall consulting, structural restoration, construction claims, design and consulting, and data centre engineering. We do not work outside these disciplines.
XTERNA operates on a retained-first model. Retained search gives us the ability to run a thorough, confidential process focused entirely on your brief rather than racing to submit CVs ahead of competing recruiters. We do consider contingency arrangements in specific circumstances, but retained search is our preferred model and delivers better outcomes for both parties.
On average, XTERNA delivers an initial shortlist within four days of brief sign-off. This is possible because of the market intelligence we hold before any search begins — we are not starting from scratch when a role comes in. The timeline varies depending on the level and specialism of the role, but speed without quality is not something we aim for.
Yes. If you are an engineer, architect, or consultant working in building enclosure, facade, forensic engineering, or a related discipline and you are considering a move, we are happy to have a confidential conversation. We work with candidates at all levels and all stages — whether you are just starting to explore options or actively looking for your next role.
XTERNA Intel is our proprietary market intelligence layer. It is built from direct conversations with engineers, architects, and consultants across the built environment — covering hiring movement, compensation benchmarks, team structures, and competitor activity. Clients use it to make better hiring decisions, benchmark their own packages, and understand how their firm sits relative to others in the market.
XTERNA recruits nationwide across the United States. We have particularly strong coverage in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Miami, and Houston — reflecting where the highest concentration of building enclosure, facade, and forensic engineering firms are based. We are not limited to these markets and work on roles across all U.S. states.
Yes. FISP and Local Law 11 compliance is a major driver of hiring demand in New York City and we work across the full FISP universe — QEWIs, consulting engineers, project managers, report writers, and firm leadership. If your practice is growing its FISP capacity or you are looking to move within that space, we can help.
